To market, to market, at Lake Ainsworth or in Lennox CBD?
THE vexed question of whether to relocate the Lennox Head markets will go before the Ballina Shire Council again when it meets today.
Crs Paul Worth, Ben Smith and Keith Johnson have put forward a rescission motion following a decision in August to permanently move the markets from Lake Ainsworth to the Community and Cultural Centre.
The markets are held on the second and fifth Sundays monthly.
Arguments for moving the markets closer to the town centre include increasing trade for local retailers and reducing the environmental impact on the lake foreshore.
In supporting the rescission motion, the councillors said that since the decision, it had become clear "the majority of the Lennox Head community wants to keep the markets at Lake Ainsworth".
The three councillors want the markets held at the community centre and Williams Reserve only when the road beside the lake is flooded and during the peak summer period.
Cr Worth said the decision to move the markets was contrary to a staff recommendation to leave them at Lake Ainsworth.
"We believe it was the wrong decision," he said.
"Hopefully all councillors have looked at everything and we can reassess the situation for the good of the community," Cr Worth said.
