The Gold Coast Titans have fended off raids from rival NRL clubs to re-sign promising young halfback Kane Elgey.

Elgey's 2015 season was cruelled by a torn ACL during pre-season but he showed enough potential to force his market value up considerably.

The Titans were set to overlook Elgey for Manly star Daley Cherry-Evans until the lucrative deal with the Queensland Origin utility fell through.

Elgey has agreed to extend his deal with the Titans a further two years until 2018.

St George Illawarra was keen to get Elgey's signature, reportedly throwing $1.5million at the 22-year-old for three years.

However, he has decided to stay loyal to the Titans, who currently have another hot young prospect in former Brisbane colt Ashley Taylor.

Meanwhile, Brisbane centre James Roberts has been caught up in the crackdown on players touching referees, charged with a grade-one contrary contact with Ben Cummins in Friday night's win over the Warriors.

Roberts will be free to play against Penrith on Saturday if he takes an early plea.

Last weekend Bulldogs forward David Klemmer was hit with a similar charge but, because of loading, faces a two-match ban.

Roberts is understood to have told teammates he has no recollection of tapping the referee on the chest.

The Bulldogs are filthy Klemmer was charged when no action was taken against Penrith forward Trent Merrin after he touched the referee on the hip moments after Klemmer's reporting.

A number of players were charged by the NRL's Match Review Committee, including Warriors forward Ben Matulino, looking at three weeks for a shoulder charge, and Roosters forward Dylan Napa, who can escape suspension if he pleads guilty to a high tackle on Raider Jordan Rapana.
