Tiger Sharks’ attack puts Condors to the test
LISMORE Workers Condors were tested by an understrength Ballina Tiger Sharks when Far North Coast Softball resumed at the weekend.
Both teams were missing players but Ballina was always going struggle to contain Condors without pitcher Michelle Lucas.
However, this did not stop Ballina from performing strongly with both teams scoring six runs in the first innings.
The next four innings saw Workers put the brakes on Ballina’s batting attack with shortstop Deidre Coe, second base Cortney Connell and pitcher Leah Van Wettering cleaning up anything that came their way. Combined with hits from Erin Little, Brie McBride and a home-run by Sammie Green saw them forge ahead to win 12-7.
Ballina shortstop Kerry Northcott, second base Mikayla Coe and the Knight sisters Jodi (pitcher) and Wendy (first base) were the best players for the Tiger Sharks.
In other games, the Rous Hotel Warriors and Lismore Workers Wild Turkeys game had it all with spectators treated to a close game from beginning to end which finished in an 8-all draw.
Warriors led 3-1 with hits from Sharyn Rose, Amy Gordon and Loris Gordon, but a batting rally at the top of third innings led by Erin Little, Lauren Forrester and Brie McBride saw Workers jump to a 6-5 lead at the completion of the third innings.
Tight fielding from both teams with Esther Denning staring on the mound for Rous striking out five batters and aggressive fielding from Kate Foster at shortstop for Workers saw both teams working hard to advance their runners.
Elsewhere, Byron Bay had a narrow 10-9 win against the Goonellabah Gunnas.
Best players from Byron were Melanie Delaney, Shar Jones and Susie Watson.
Highlights for Goonellabah included a double play to Mandy Brown, who took a great running catch at centrefield and then fired the ball to first base to get the runner out, and Jodie Foster who had a great game at shortstop.
