NEW Australian captain Steve Smith's outstanding run of form has seen him named in the ICC's Test and ODI teams of the year.

Smith's deputy David Warner and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood also secured spots in the Test XI, while world No.1 one-day bowler Mitchell Starc was named in the ODI team.

Smith compiled 1724 runs and seven centuries at 82.57 in 13 Tests in the qualification period that ran from September 18 in 2014, to September 13 this year. He also scored 1249 runs and four hundreds at 59.47 in 26 ODIs.

Warner hit 1182 runs and four centuries at 47.28, including twin tons against India at the Adelaide Oval last summer, and was named as one the openers with England captain Alastair Cook.

Hazlewood, man of the match in the recent day/night Test against New Zealand, has made an excellent start to his Test career, taking 53 wickets in 12 Tests, reaching the half-century milestone faster than former Aussie bowlers Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Mitchell Johnson. Of those 53 scalps, 40 of them came in the nine matches in the qualification period.

England's Stuart Broad, New Zealander Trent Boult and Pakistan leg spinner Yasir Shah were the other bowlers to make the team, the surprise omission being Indian spinner Ravi Ashwin who was named 12th man despite taking 55 wickets in eight Tests.

Starc, man-of-the-tournament in the 2015 World Cup, was a certainty to make the ODI team after claiming 47 wickets from 22 matches at 17.70.
