Three men accused of $20m cocaine import to be sentenced

THREE men who pleaded guilty over a drug importation syndicate after about 50kg of cocaine was found in barrels at Mackay rail yards will face a sentence hearing on Wednesday that is expected to continue for the rest of the week.

The three Colombians - Juan Pablo Ocampo Alvarez, 29, German Rendon Alvarez, 47, and Alexis Giovany Gomez Ruiz, 35 - were listed to be sentenced at Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday but their hearing was adjourned after their defence lawyers revealed they had not had enough time with their clients to prepare.

The matter was briefly mentioned on Tuesday and the legal teams told Justice Debra Mullins the matter would be able to proceed on Wednesday.

It is expected they will be sentenced over three days as some facts are still in dispute.

The men will be sentenced for conspiring to import and traffic commercial quantities of cocaine.
