Poo in a bible: Teens accused of $10,000 church rampage

UPDATE 12.30PM: THREE teenagers broke into a Goonellabah church on Easter Monday and defecated on a holy book, set off fire extinguishers, threw paint on the floors, curtains and walls and stole various items.

Police allege the boys, two 13-year-olds and one 15-year-old, broke into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located on Glen Court around 10am and caused more than $10,000 worth of damage.

The bishop of the church, Jim Fuggle, said it was demoralising to see the damage.

"It's hard to understand why someone would feel the need or the urge to do this, not just to this building but to any building," he said.

"They let off all the fire extinguishers so the whole building is now covered in that dust.

"We don't know if the carpets will have to all get replaced."

He said it wasn't clear at this stage how much was stolen, apart from a laptop belonging to a youth leader.

9.45AM: THREE juveniles have been charged following a break in at a church in Goonellabah yesterday.

Police from Richmond Local Area Command said two 13-year-old boys and one 15-year-old boy had been charged with aggravated break and enter following the incident.

Police allege the three juveniles broke into the church on Glen Court around 10am and caused over $10,000 worth of damage.

One of the juveniles cut his arm and sought help from a neighbour.

The neighbour became suspicious so checked out the church and observed the damage.

Police were called and the investigation commenced.

The juveniles were arrested and subsequently charged with aggravated break and enter with intent to commit serious indictable offence.

They were released on bail to attend Lismore Childrens Court in May.
