Jail for drinking three cartons of beer before driving

A MAN who was caught drink-driving in Mount Morgan after admittedly downing three cartons of beer during the course of the day has been jailed.

In Rockhampton Magistrate's Court on Friday, Bradley Peckover pleaded guilty to driving unlicensed and to drink-driving, after he was caught with a reading of 0.158%.

Defence lawyer Doug Winning said Peckover's wife was in the car at the time and they were driving a short distance to pick up some medication for his mother-in-law.

The court heard at the time she was in palliative care dying of cancer, and had died a month after Peckover was caught.

"He knows he shouldn't have been driving, but it was a particularly emotional time in his life and his partner's life," Mr Winning said.

The offence occurred around 9.45pm on March 13 in Mount Morgan when Peckover was pulled over on East St by police conducting patrols.

In court, parts of Peckover's extensive traffic history was read out, which included four disqualified driving charges and three drink-driving charges in five years.

While Magistrate Michael O'Driscoll took into account Peckover's personal distress he said his traffic history was deplorable, and condemned his disobedience of court orders and his consumption of alcohol before driving.

In total Peckover was sentenced to 20 months in jail with a parole eligibility date of September 29, and also had his licence disqualified again.
