Threat to get free sex

STEPHEN Templeton pretended to be a police officer so he could get free sex from a male prostitute.

The 38-year-old electrician and father of three phoned the non-English speaking male prostitute and arranged to meet him at an inner city motel in Mackay last November 23.

The male sex worker met Templeton at a motel room and noticed Templeton was wearing a blue t-shirt and blue-type clothing.

Templeton claimed he didn't have his wallet or ID with him.

Templeton told the sex worker he'd allow him to continue to work in Mackay in return for free sexual favours, prosecutor Sheena Hayes told the Mackay Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Because of his poor understanding of English, and realising that police might be involved, the sex worker became scared and feared he was in trouble, so he contacted the motel manager.

Templeton fled by driving off but the sex worker and motel manager both noted the number plate and reported it to police. Templeton was located later that day.

He pleaded guilty yesterday to impersonating police.

Solicitor David Strutynski, of Strutynski Law, said Templeton only pretended to be a police officer after he decided he didn't want any sex.

Public exposure of this offence in the media should be taken into account in handing down a penalty, Mr Strutynski said.

Magistrate Mark Morrow said it was clear that Templeton indicated he was a police officer.

"General and personal deterrence is particularly important in this case," Mr Morrow said.

Templeton was fined $900.
