LISMORE MP Thomas George will today announce he intends to contest the next election so he can continue fighting for the Stage Three upgrade of Lismore Base Hospital.

There has been speculation for weeks that Mr George, who has been under intense pressure over coal seam gas, might join Ballina MP Don Page in retiring from politics at the next election.

However, Mr George has told The Northern Star he believes there is a good chance he can secure funding to finish the hospital upgrade using funds from the planned sell-off of electricity poles and wires in Sydney.

Mr George has been fighting for the hospital upgrade since he was first elected and after more than a decade in opposition and one term in government he said he felt he could not walk away when Stage Three "was so close, yet so far".

Mr George is expected to make the announcement at a press conference today at Lismore Courthouse, where he will also be announcing upgrades to the court.
