This budget does not give protection for women: Saffin
LABOR candidate for Page Janelle Saffin and Shadow Attorney General Mark Dreyfus have condemned Federal Government cuts to the Northern Rivers Community Legal Centre, which could force the closure of programs aimed at preventing violence against women.
"The protection for women is lessened in this budget due to cuts to women's services and the community legal centres," Ms Saffin said. "There is a lot of talk about domestic violence but this budget does not address or give protection for women."
According to Mr Dreyfus: "Community legal centres in New South Wales, including the Northern Rivers CLC, will have up to a third of their Commonwealth funding withdrawn.
"Last year the Northern Rivers CLC was selected by the NSW Government as one of five sites to roll out the Safer Pathways reforms for Domestic Violence, an integrated response service to prevent domestic violence deaths and serious injury to women and children.
"But how will the program be impacted when cuts come into effect next year?"
The Northern Rivers CLC fears it may not be able to retain an early intervention child protection solicitor or continue its family law early intervention service.
It may also have to close its Tweed Heads office and cease its weekly visits to Casino, with only the Lismore office remaining open.
