'Lousy' thieves break into Notaras timber mill

IN AN act that's been compared to looting, thieves waded through flood waters to break into the Notaras Timber mill office in South Grafton on Tuesday.

"It was just lousy, it's the same as people breaking into houses once residents are told to evacuate," said timber mill employee Donna Layton.

The thieves only managed to steal a small television set and a small amount of money which the staff pool to purchase lottery tickets.

They then turned their attention to an old steel safe.

They went to great effort to haul the heavy safe across the office floor before realising it was open.

"That's the funny part they went to all the effort of dragging the safe across the floor and it was open all along," timber mill owner Spiro Notaras said.

Police attended the scene this morning to investigate.

The majority of the machinery at the mill avoided flooding however Mr Notaras said the main plant was just millimetres from flooding.
