They work to reduce deaths of young people

THEY'RE here to help. That was the message from local mental health service providers StandBy, Youth Connections North Coast and headspace on World Suicide Prevention Day yesterday.

A small team of friendly professionals were on hand at Lismore Shopping Square to raise local awareness about suicide - the second leading cause of death in 15-29 year olds - and its prevention.

StandBy offers a 24-hour crisis response to assist families, friends, associates and witnesses affected by suicide. Youth Connections and headspace provide a range of community services, including mental health assistance.

Lifeline says research into crisis lines established they can be effective in reducing suicidal thoughts and assisting people to cope with crisis.
