WHEN the owners of a local industrial safety company saw a gap in the market, they decided to fill it.

Now, with the help of the State Government, Liz and Robert Stringer's invention will help improve safety for workers and the public alike.

While working in their business, Highpoint Access and Rescue, the pair realised an industry-wide difficulty in meeting legislative requirements for working in confined spaces.

And thus the Confined Space Access Safety System Innovation (CASSI) was born.

CASSI as she is affectionately known, is a portable device designed to improve safety during confined space rescues and is one of 10 potential new products advancing to the marketplace, thanks to a Queensland Government business program.

"The purpose of CASSI was to help the industry comply with its legislative requirements," Mrs Stringer said.

"CASSI was borne out of our need really and then we got talking and seeing workers on sites, people would come and say to us 'do you market that'?"

"There's a lot of systems out there that have either a light or just a camera on it's own and what we've done is looked at industry needs and, borne out of our own requirements, we've encapsulated it into one system.

"CASSI will also have the ability to warn people of emergencies so there will be a strobe light, communication and obviously down the track with the quad system, we're hoping to have air quality control monitoring as well."

Local involvement is also very important to Mrs Stringer, who said the goal was to have the product made right here in the Beef Capital.

"We would actually love to be able to manufacture CASSI in Rockhampton," Mrs Stringer said.

"It would be a great opportunity, not just for us, but also for Rockhampton industry as a whole."

Minister for State Development Dr Anthony Lynham said Highpoint Access and Rescue was one of 10 Queensland businesses being mentored under the new program.

"Highpoint's integrated light-camera for confined spaces could become commercially viable and this mentoring will help them get their product to market and create more jobs," Dr Lynham said.

"They are just one of 10 Queensland companies in the engineering, construction and resource sectors whose products have earned them a spot on a mentoring program.

"This is about getting innovative products off the drawing board and into the marketplace to support growth and jobs."
