The best treats to give your doggo this festive season
GIVING your pets healthy treats over the festive season is the best gift an animal can receive.
As the owner of Natural Pet Pantry, Jeanette Davies urges pet owners to resist the temptation to feed them human treats, which she said can be dangerous for their beloved animals.
"Pets need a healthy diet in the hot weather and don't give them junk food," she said.
"Even some fruits, like avocados, grapes and garlic, is bad for them.
"So feed your pets a varied diet, for dogs this means lots of wet food, bone broth, frozen bones, dried treats and livers are fantastic".
Ms Davies also warned pet owners to be careful about the types of treats they choose.
"Some rawhide treats are very dangerous they can go greasy and swell up in the dog's throat," she said.
"Some dried meats have a lot of sulphides and colours, so if you want to them treats get Australian-made and all-natural with no sulphides."
Feeding your pet an all-dry diet is common misconception and should be avoided, Ms Davies warned.
"A variety of offals, bones and different raw game meats are perfect," she said.
"Anyone who gets a dog this Christmas is welcome to bring the puppy in and we can advise them on a health diet."
Ms Davies said it's also important to ensure keep your pet stays hydrated.
"To help you can add ice blocks into their water bowls," she said.
Ms Davies has been running the business since October 2015.
She said after losing everything in the the 2017 flood, she was determined to keep her business going.
Every day owners bring their dogs into her store and Ms Davies said this is one of the highlights of running the business.
She said it's a delight to help owners keep their pets healthy and happy.
"I love it when our four-legged customers come in," she said with a smile.
"The dogs put their paws up on the table and sniff the food and they get treats here and I know them all by name."
