IN A tiebreaker for Australia Day, two men were named Citizen of the Year at the Evans Head-Casino Surf Lifesaving Club.

Casino's Stuart George and John Wright from Evans Head received their Australia Day awards from Richmond Valley mayor Ernie Bennett.

Mr Wright said he was embarrassed to win.

"A lot of people out there are doing great work in the community and they go unrecognised," he said.

The former bank manager shook hands with Mr George. Neither of them knew who had nominated them for the award.

"It's very humbling to be acknowledged for the work we do," Mr George said.

"My mum and dad showed me through their efforts how to make the community a better place."

Awards were given to Jack Denson for Young Sportsperson, Deidre Coe for Sportsperson of the Year, Aidan Yourell for Young Volunteer, Macarthur Amey for Young Citizen and Kevin Mason for Volunteer of the Year.

After the citizenship and awards ceremony, the children played on the beach, the sausages sizzled and the colourful umbrellas came out for a wet Australia Day.

Catering coordinator Keepa Tuuta ordered 200 kilos of sausages for the day, he said.
