Thousands of students abandoned without Gonski: Union

THE Australian Education Union says if the Federal Government fails to honour the final two years of Gonski funding, in 2018 and 2019, thousands of students will be abandoned.

Education Minister Simon Birmingham said yesterday the government was still in discussions with states about school funding from 2018.

However, he told Fairfax: "The previous (Labor) government's approach showed great largesse in tipping additional funding into the system, but they created a complicated model that lacks fairness and transparency."

AEU president Correna Haythorpe said the funding was getting results and schools needed the full six years of it to get the resources that students needed.
