Terrorised and bashed in own home

AN EAST Ballina couple was assaulted and terrorised during a violent home invasion yesterday.

A 43-year-old man forced his way into the Barwen Street unit of a 44-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman about 5.50am after knocking at the door.

The assailant pushed past the female occupant and made his way to a bedroom where the 44-year-old man was sleeping and bashed him over the head with a large piece of wood.

Police and paramedics were called to the residence and the man was treated for a deep wound to his forehead and bruising to his left eye socket before being taken by ambulance to Ballina Hospital, where he was reported to be in a stable condition.

About 1pm yesterday, the assailant attended Ballina police station where he was arrested and charged with aggravated break and enter, common assault, and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Lismore Local Court next month.

Police said investigations into the matter are continuing and anyone with information is urged to contact Ballina det-ectives on 6681 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
