Terrifying car-jack attempt at Casino car wash

A FAMILY is in shock after a man tried to steal their car with a woman and her child inside at a Northern Rivers car wash on Sunday.

Richmond Police District chief inspector Nicole Bruce said the alleged car-jacking occurred at Casino car wash on Sunday afternoon, when a man walked away from the vehicle, leaving his wife and their child inside.

"On Sunday at 2.55pm a man attempted to steal a vehicle after the couple with their child in the rear seat drove into the Casino car wash," she said.

"After the husband left the vehicle to wash the car, another man approached the driver's side of the and got in."

Insp Bruce said the vehicle's owner rushed straight over and demanded the stranger get out.

"The car went forward a couple of metres and then the offender exited the car and took off in a white van," she said.

"No-one was injured."

However, Insp Bruce said the incident was caught on the car wash's CCTV and was now being examined.

"Police are now forensically examining the van and the CCTV footage," she said.

"If anyone witnessed the alleged car-jacking or has dash-cam footage we would appreciate them coming forward."

"Police later found what they believe to be the same van at another incident at Shannon Brook (south-west of Casino) yesterday when a dual-cab ute was stolen."

This is the latest in a number of car-jacking incidents which have occurred on the Northern Rivers, Insp Bruce said.

"There have been a few car-jacking incidents here and in southern Queensland," she said.

"Police urge all drivers to be vigilant and not to leave their keys in their vehicles."
