Temporary road to cost $750,000 at Upper Coopers Creek
THE Upper Coopers Creek Landslip Recovery Committee, chaired by Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson, has updated residents with progress on roadworks.
The emergency access road will be inspected over the coming weeks to ensure that the road continues to be ready in the event that it is needed to be used.
Public Works NSW (DSTA) have completed the draft Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and the preliminary design with a preliminary costing estimate for the temporary road of $750,000.
The council will put forward a proposal to the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) about the strong necessity for the temporary road based on social and economic impacts, unknown nature of the site and residents' concerns that they are not confident that further delays may not arise.
Geotechnical engineers have advised that additional drilling is needed prior to finalising the repair design, anticipated to be completed within about two months.
Currently the estimated cost to repair the road is about $2 million and is anticipated to take about three months to fix once under way, dependent on the final design and weather.
Residents are reminded that if they need to take a vehicle larger than five tonnes across the landslip they can contact council to see if this could be managed.
An inspection and assessment of the vehicle, for example a septic pump-out truck, will need to be completed and could result in the vehicle being able to cross.
