Boy, 17, dies after pool ‘fight’

A TEEN who allegedly assaulted an employee at a Hunter region public pool north of Sydney has died after police were called to the scene.

The boy, 17, had allegedly assaulted an employee at Lambton Pool, leading to police being called.

Witnesses allegedly had to hold the teen down until they arrived, by which time they found him in a serious condition.

The boy was treated at the scene by paramedics, then taken to John Hunter Hospital where he later died.

A spokeswoman for John Hunter Hospital said she was unable to give any information regarding the incident due to the boy being underage.

Last night, the pool announced it would be closed until further notice.

"Due to unforeseen circumstances the Lambton Swimming Pool will be closed for an undetermined short period of time.

"We appreciate the patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

We will update everyone as soon as possible," read the post on the pool's Facebook page.

One passerby told The Daily Telegraph that something "extremely dramatic" had happened at the Lambton Pool.

"It's one of the biggest crime scenes I've ever seen," he said.

It's understood that more than one employee was injured in the assault, with ambulances being called to attend to staff as well as the teen.

Police confirmed a critical incident team will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to independent review.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
