Teen Minjee Lee claims maiden tour win

SHE turns 19 next Wednesday, but rising Australian star Minjee Lee got an early birthday present yesterday when she won her first LPGA Tour event - the rain-delayed Kingsmill Championship in Virginia - by two strokes.

The West Australian, a mad Fremantle Dockers fan, shot a final-round 65 to finish on 15-under, two strokes clear of South Korea's So Yeon Ryu.

Lee pocketed almost $A245,000 for the victory and jumped 40 places on the world rankings to No.19.

"I didn't think that moment would come this year, so I'm stoked to have won," she said.

The teen has enjoyed a solid rookie season on the LPGA Tour, making seven cuts from 11 starts and finishing in the top 10 once prior to her Williamsburg triumph.

She becomes only the seventh player to win on tour before the age of 19, joining an elite group that includes world No.1 Lydia Ko.
