Teen given life sentence for murdering Aussie sports star

AN AMERICAN teen has been sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility for parole over the 2013 shooting death of Australian baseball player Chris Lane in Oklahoma.

Chancey Luna, 18, was found guilty of murder earlier this year after a jury took less than an hour to determine his fate.

Mr Lane, 22, originally from Melbourne, was shot in the back with a .22 calibre handgun while out jogging.

Luna fired the weapon from the backseat of a friend's car.

Luna's mates James Edwards, 15, was charged with first degree murder and Michael Jones, 17, was charged as an accessory for their involvement in Mr Lane's murder.

The court heard all three teens were members of the infamous Crips street gang.

Luna's lawyers have filed an appeal but it will take about two years before it will be heard.
