THE new Northern Rivers Premier Tennis League competition got off to a flying start at Ballina on Saturday, with most top players in the region playing two sets of singles and two sets of doubles.

Seven teams of four players are competing over eight weeks, culminating in the finals on December 6.

In the top singles match-ups, Brendon Moore of Lismore defeated Aaron Westerlund of Tweed Heads 6-1 6-2; Moore's younger brother Nathan defeated top Ballina junior Manu Rowe 7-6 3-6 12-10; and Tweed's Reece Williamson was too good for Ballina's Dwayne Smith6-1 6-2.

The lower ranks give the best local juniors the chance to battle it out with each other and also see how they measure up against experienced adults.

The player of the day was Sarah Herrington of Alstonville, who clawed her way back from a set down to defeat Casino young gun Max Simpkins in a tough encounter.

She then combined with Murwillumbah's William Bagnall to defeat Simpkins and Goonellabah's Sean Buss in her doubles.

Team Tsonga d Team Ferrer 5 matches to 1: B Moore d A Westerlund 6-1 6-2; J Rowe d J Eckersley 6-0 6-2; G Preston lost to B White 0-6 3-6; H Smith d S Siddons 6-7 7-6 10-2.

The second round will be played at the Lismore Town courts on Saturday.

Junior action

A JUNIOR interclub competition has also started.

Three divisions with seven teams in each are being played on a home-and-away basis.

Ballina, Byron Bay, Casino, East Lismore, Goonellabah, Lismore, Mullumbimby and Ocean Shores clubs are fielding teams.
