Teacher with a passion for song

FOR East Ballina-based singing teacher, Megan Albany, singing and performing is a growth industry on the North Coast.

With the increased popularity of television talent shows such as The Voice and X-Factor, Ms Albany has a waiting list of would be Reece Mastins lining up for vocal coaching.

After moving to the Northern Rivers two years ago Ms Albany and her partner, Marc Mittag set up the Ballina Byron College of Music.

The couple recently bought a gloriously rambling block of flats in East Ballina and Ms Albany teaches voice from the home studio there while Mr Mittag teaches music at a local high school.

"In Sydney I taught at several large institutions such as the Australian Institute of Music and the Actors College," Ms Albany said.

"Even though I taught at these large institutions I often struggled to get regular students whereas here I have a waiting list of students."

Ms Albany was one of the singing teachers who coached the then 10-year-old Byron Public School student, Amanuael Visser, to final tryouts for Young Talent Time in 2011.

Amanuael has since moved to Victoria and the couple are continuing songwriting collaboration with him for an upcoming album.

Ms Albany started out as a journalist doing a masters in creative writing, a cadetship and a year of journalism.

"Then I had one singing lesson and much to my father's dismay I decided that actually I wanted to be a singer," Ms Albany said.

After a career singing both in Australia and Ireland Ms Albany has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with her students.

She also believes that almost anyone can learn to sing if they have the passion, the patience and the openness.

"I have often got the best results from people with incredible passion but not necessarily the most talent," she said.
