Taylor doubles up at New Year Open

IT WAS a double celebration for Redcliffe tennis player Taylor Douglas when she took out the open women's singles and doubles at the Ballina New Year Open yesterday.

The No3 seed was too strong for Emily Burns with a 6-3 6-1 victory in the singles final and combined with Gold Coast player Nana Miyakawa for a 6-4 6-3 win in the doubles.

It capped a big week for the 21-year-old who also took out the open doubles and made the semi-finals in the singles at the Lismore Open tournament last week.

"I played smart and did what I had to," Douglas said.

"It's tough playing four or five matches a day, but I'm keen to play as much as I can this year."

In other matches, veteran Sunshine Coast player Peter Tramacchi teamed up with Taylor Smith to defeat Lismore players Brendan and Nathan Moore 6-4 1-6 10-8 in the open men's doubles final.

In 2007 Tramacchi coached the Australian junior Davis Cup team that included now world No42 Bernard Tomic.

The open men's singles final is scheduled for 8.30am today with Brendan Moore to face No3 seed Brad Clews.
