Taumalolo 'a little fish in a big pond' in NFL bid

RUGBY LEAGUE: North Queensland coach Paul Green doesn't buy into talk Jason Taumalolo's NFL trial is an attempt to boost his NRL market value.

Green said there was genuine interest in the giant Cowboys forward from the NFL.

"After what Jarryd Hayne did I think it piqued interest in our game and Jason is an unbelievable athlete so he fits the mould,” Green said.

"But he is a little fish in a big pond over there.”

At least 16 NFL scouts will watch Taumalolo and Cronulla's Kangaroos winger Valentine Holmes at a drills session at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Taumalolo and Holmes are off-contract in 2017 and share the same manager.

Asked about the theory proposed by Sharks captain Paul Gallen that the trials were an attempt to increase NRL contract money, Green said: "I am not sure. You will have to ask his management group.”

But Green said he didn't want to lose Taumalolo to the NFL.

"He will play for us next year, so we don't lose anything to that extent,” he said. "But we would like to extend Jason's (contract) for longer.”
