Tanker crash forced closure of Pacific Highway

A PETROL tanker crash forced the closure of the Pacific Hwy near Ballina shortly after 3pm yesterday.

The tanker and a car collided head-on the highway north of Ballina and the sole male occupant of the car was flown by rescue helicopter to Lismore Base Hospital with serious injuries.

The male driver of the truck has been taken to Ballina Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

One of the truck's tanks rolled onto its side and ruptured and Hazmat crews were at the scene last night to minimise the risk.

The highway was expected to be closed for hours and diversions were in place.
