Taking control of your learning
WITH the 2013 school year just starting, Megan Hale has established a new business aimed at helping students take charge of their learning.
Ms Hale is offering tailored tutoring and educational coaching for children and adults with reading difficulties and special learning needs.
Ms Hale has a background in adult education and over the years became determined to understand why some people have difficulty reading and understanding in the educational context.
"In 2010 I went to Sydney to get a Masters of Education in Special Education," she said.
"I want to be as flexible as I can in the delivery of my services to respond to the needs of students
"I also want to completely support teachers in the education system.
"People with learning difficulties I talked to over the years are often angry about their apparent lack of ability at school and the way they were spoken to by teachers and their peers.
"I have also worked with extremely successful business people that were ashamed they couldn't read or write.
"In only 7-10% of cases is there some physiological reason why people can't learn.
"Beyond that there is a whole spectrum of causes including a reading problem or the inability to attend for any length of time."
Ms Hale ideally works with students one-on-one over a 10-week period with an assessment at the end of that time.
"Don't want to just go on an endless path of classes with no measurable progress," she said.
