Avoid Pacific Highway today: RTA

MOTORISTS, truck drivers and holidaymakers have been urged to avoid the Pacific Highway today at all costs.

The RTA has issued an advisory calling for those travelling between Sydney and Brisbane to do so on the New England Highway.

It follows two days of major delays north of Coffs Harbour and Grafton and south of Bulahdelah.

Blackadder Creek, north of Corindi, has been a major trouble spot over the past 48 hours.

Highway traffic was queued up to 10 kilometres again yesterday as vehicles proceeded through floodwaters at 40km/h.

Local truck driver Ian Jeffrey reported that traffic was banked up to Broadwater on Monday night and every available parking space off the highway was occupied.

He was forced to finish his trip between Brisbane and Sydney yesterday after it took him four hours to reach Coffs Harbour from Corindi.

“There were trucks parked right along the side of the road. The Halfway Creek servo was full of holidaymakers and truck drivers, the BP at Grafton was the same and all the truck parking bays were full of trucks and cars,” Mr Jeffrey said.

Delays have also been experienced at Shark Creek, Tyndale and Ulmarra.

The Coffs Harbour region has received a total of 294 millimetres of rain between Saturday and yesterday.
