Take a dive or walk for cancer

LISMORE'S Trinity Catholic College is taking the lead in the pool this year when the annual Cancer Council Relay for Life heads underwater for the first time.

Committee member of the Lismore and Villages Relay for Life Don Whitelaw said the annual Cancer Council fundraiser was open to anyone in the community and all for a good cause.

"We hope to have 100 teams nominate," he said.

"It's a little different this year in that while we will walk around the oval at Southern Cross University, we're also going to swim laps in the SCU pool next door to the oval."

Relay for Life is an overnight community event where teams of 10-15 participate in a relay-style walk or run to raise funds for Cancer Council. In past years the Lismore community has done a relay walk/run and this is the first year swim teams are involved.

The event is organised by a local volunteer organising committee on behalf of the Cancer Council.

One of the Trinity swim teams is made up of a group of students aged between 13 and 15, including Mr Whitelaw's 14-year-old grandson Mitchell Whitelaw.

"I'm doing this for a team thing, to give it a go. I want to help raise money. I reckon it will be really fun," Mitchell said.

His mother, Tiffany Whitelaw said: "I think it's a great way for them to be fit and active, doing something they love and raising money for research at the same time.

"I think kids today are very aware of the importance of research, especially Mitchell as his grandfather is a cancer survivor. Research saved his grandfather."

The committee is hoping more swimmers of all ages will get together and nominate a swim team. There is still room of course for more walkers and teams to participate in the event on the weekend of April 28-29.

To nominate a swim or walking team for this year's event visit relayforlife.org.au or call Lismore committee chairman Don Campbell on 6621 2332.
