Aussie dad’s lotto mistake scores $1.3m
A Sydney dad has become an instant millionaire after accidentally winning two lottery jackpots with just one ticket.
The man - from Parramatta in western Sydney - took home a total prize of $1,333,333.34 from Monday & Wednesday Lotto draw 3914, which was drawn on Monday night.
In a bizarre twist, it was revealed he had scored a double division one win after accidentally marking two games with the exact same winning numbers - meaning he had managed to win twice with the same ticket.
The father, who has chosen to remain anonymous, bought his lucky 18-game entry from Parramatta CBD Newsagency.
Speaking to a NSW Lotteries official yesterday, the NSW man said he was still "in a state of shock".
"You have no idea how this has helped my family," he said.
"I'll be able to pay off my mortgage and I'm able to help my kids. It's already been spent mate, but all wisely I can assure you.
"It's so much appreciated."
He described his incredible double win as a "happy accident".
"I've been buying lottery tickets for a while now. You can't dream if you don't have a ticket. So I buy a ticket," he said.
"I used to just buy QuickPick tickets at random. But then I sat down and saw what numbers were picked out most frequently and least frequently, and just used combinations of those.
"But it wasn't deliberate that I had two rows of the same numbers. It was just that I had to mark another line on the ticket, so it's a very happy accident."
Parramatta CBD Newsagency owner William Ho told lottery staff he had been waiting a "long, long time" to sell a winning ticket.
"We've been here for 15 years and we've never sold a division one," he said.
"I was very happy … when I saw we had sold not one but two division one wins.
"It's such good news. We wish our customer all the best with their double prize."
In the 12 months to June 30, 2019, Monday & Wednesday Lotto and Saturday Lotto created 193 millionaires across Australia.
The winning numbers in Monday & Wednesday Lotto draw 3914 were 9, 2, 19, 17, 36 and 22 while the supplementary numbers were 26 and 8.
Across Australia, there were six division one wins in Monday & Wednesday Lotto draw 3914 on Monday 21 October 2019 - three were from New South Wales, and there was one each from Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.
Yesterday, it was also revealed that seven colleagues from Kingswood Park in western Sydney had also scored division one in the Monday & Wednesday Lotto draw after being part of a long-running syndicate.
The workmates held one of the six division one wins nationally in the draw, taking home a prize of $666,666.67 - however, their win was boosted to $668,562.67 because the syndicate's marked System 7 entry also scored division three six times.
They are already making plans for their windfall, with members of the group deciding to pay off mortgages and take overseas holidays.
The syndicate leader said the win was "unbelievable".
"We've been playing this syndicate for a couple of years now. Actually, we just invited two people in a few weeks ago so they'll be over the moon," the winner said.
"I don't know what to say. It's just unbelievable! I'll have to go have an early beer.
"Everyone will be just rapt. They'll get a lot of enjoyment out of that I can tell you."
