Sweet love story nurtured into prize-winning garden

MARK and Jennifer Wade's beautiful, expansive City View Drive garden has taken out the People's Choice Award in Lismore Garden Club Spring Garden Competition, in conjunction with The Northern Star.

Mrs Wade said it felt "really good" to win the award, but added: "I have to admit that it's mostly my husband's work, he's the garden guru.

"He just loves gardening; he's much more creative than me. He finds it relaxing."

The couple said what made the garden so lovely was its large size, but that's also what made it a lot of work.

However Mr Wade said that, to him, gardening was simply "a labour of love."

In fact, behind this garden was a sweet love story, and Mr Wade said the property was very sentimental to him.

The land was my grandfather's; it's been in my family for about 100 years. Before he died, he said Jennifer and I could buy the land.

So, about nine years ago, they did just that and with a clear vision in mind, designed and built the home from the ground up.

"Jennifer designed the house, and I did the garden, with her supervision," he laughed.

The best part about their garden, he said, is that it's just a "nice pleasant walk" with a park feel.

"We're next to the national park on the bottom side, so there are all sorts of birds. Finches, kookaburras, they come and go."

Mr Wade said he enjoyed the large amount of colour, variety, aspects and elevations in his garden.

He admits he could spend hours back there, especially in the lead up to the Spring Garden Competition.

"It was almost an everyday thing with the preparation."
