Swans, Tigers win junior AFL

LISMORE SWANS and Tweed Coast Tigers are basking in premierships today after winning their age division grand finals in Northern Rivers Junior AFL at Bangalow.

The Swans held on by just two points against Byron Magpies to win the Under-14 grand final, 4.7 (31) to 3.11 (29).

Neither team could gain the ascendency in the low-scoring yet highly skilled game but, after trailing by five points at half-time, the Swans stormed home to take the lead and the game.

Ashlin Coyne, Lochie Cheffins and Max Beresford were Lismore's best while Davis Jenson, Will Harbison, Elliot Brain and Sequoya Rawson-Smith were Byron's best.

In the Under-12s, the Tigers defeated the Magpies by 64 points, 12.6 (78) to 2.2 (14).

Best players for the winners were Jacob Haines, who kicked seven goals, Riley Jones, Kurt Skuse, Billy Stevenson, Luke Chaffer and Michael Arnold.

For Byron, Caleb Brumby, Jun Touzel, Ethan Thompson, John Pupangamirri, Chi Desmond-Weller and Patrick Scurrah were the best players.

The junior league's award winners for 2009 were:

Under-12s best-and-fairest, Kurt Skuse (Tweed); runner-up, Jake Brown (Maclean); Under-14s best-and-fairest, Lochie Cheffins (Lismore), runner-up, Jack Hyland (Maclean).
