‘Suspicious item’ locks down Sydney business district

POLICE have shut down Parramatta's main street at peak hour this morning, after reports of a "suspicious item" being found outside the courthouse.

The object was found at the corner of George Street and Marsden, police confirmed.

"About 6.40am emergency services were called to the intersection ... No further information is available at this time," a police spokeswoman said.

Photos from the scene show a heavy police presence as well as fire crews while police tape has been pulled across George St.

According to a post on facebook, the entire area has been evacuated

"Parramatta Justice Precinct has been evacuated! 8.17am still evacuated. No further news. Please share," wrote Deidre Pinder on Facebook.

The closure has thrown George Street into chaos, with Western Sydney residents taking to social media to complain.

"It turns out I'm not getting to the office in a hurry," Des Lee wrote on Twitter.

"What is going on in Parramatta near law precinct? Streets blocked off, traffic chaos. ?," wrote another user.

Currently there is no access to The Great Western Highway from Marsden St.
