Firies suspicious after fire starts again in national park

A FIRE that has flared up again in the Nightcap National Park is being treated as suspicious.

Northern Rivers Rural Fire Service Superintendent Michael Brett said the fire, which had been burning since mid-September, had been fully contained and extinguished before RFS was called to the site again at about 5.30pm Wednesday.

The fire is currently listed by the Rural Fire Service as burning out of control.

He said the fire was now burning on the other side of the fire trail to the north-west of where it had previously been.

Large areas of the park have been closed to the public, including the Minyon Falls lookout entrances, Minyon Grass picnic area, Rummery Park camping ground, walking tracks and connecting roads.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and noticed something suspicious should phone NPWS on 1300 072 757 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The fire danger rating for the Northern Rivers today is low-moderate.
