Surfing: Wright, Wilkinson progress in Rip Curl Pro
FORMER Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright and the in-form Byron Bay- based Matt Wilkinson progressed yesterday in the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in Victoria.
In clean 1m waves, Wright edged out local favourite Nikki Van Dijk in the fourth round of the women's event.
"I felt like I sat for 17 minutes ... and then it played out in my favour," she said.
"I got three big turns so I was pretty happy with that.
" Tomorrow is a new day but I am feeling good."
Wright will take on American Courtney Conlogue in the quarter- finals.
Six-time world champion and three-time event winner Stephanie Gilmore is also through but will now come up against defending world champ Carissa Moore.
Sally Fitzgibbons joins compatriots Wright and Gilmore in the last eight.
In the men's event, Wilkinson, Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson and Davey Cathels are the Australians into the fourth round.
