Surfing: Bells taking its toll on North Coast surfers
THERE were mixed results for Far North Coast surfers in the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in Victoria at the weekend.
Lennox Head's Stu Kennedy survived the second round with a win against Matt Banting.
He will face an elimination round again after he was beaten in the third round by Nat Young in one of the final heats yesterday.
Adam Melling was eliminated in the second round and will look towards the next event at Margaret River in Western Australia net month.
Elsewhere, Byron Bay- based Matt Wilkinson advanced to the third round by continuing the form that saw him win the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast this month.
"Hopefully I can keep the WSL leader jersey for a while," Wilkinson said.
"That kind of success early in the year shows what the hard work can do, and I want to keep doing it.
"We will see how well I can do this year."
Former Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright lost a heat for the first time this season in the third round.
She will get another chance in the fourth round when the women's competition resumes today.
Wright is looking to win back-to-back events for the first time after taking the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast.
Meanwhile, Evans Head surfer Ruben Roxburgh made the final of the Australian Longboarding Pro at Kingscliff yesterday.
He was beaten in the four-man final with two-time world champion Taylor Jensen walking away with the win.
