Surfers to relish huge swell

BIG waves are coming and surfers are on standby.

Conditions are building for some of the best surf of the year today and tomorrow, with Saturday expected to be the pick of the week.

North Wall at Ballina was a hot spot yesterday morning, as surfers made the most of the small, but almost perfect, waves.

Respected surfing website, Swellnet, says waves will reach about eight foot by the weekend.

In his forecast on the website, Steve Shearer said the swell is likely to be even bigger than that at Northern NSW beaches on Saturday.

The good surfing conditions are the result of a strong pulse of south-south east swell, which will arrive today, and by Friday the effects of a long and broad fetch of east-south east gales across the Tasman are expected to “bear fruit”.

As Shearer commented: “Looks like it’s gunna be a good ’un.”
