Surfers meet up at new JS store opening

SOME of the world's best surfers helped local board riders sign on for the 2016 season as part of the launch of the JS Industries Concept surfboard store in Byron Bay on Friday night.

The JS Garage is the first shop in the world to exclusively stock boards shaped by Tweed-based shaper Jason Sevenson, store manager Wade Roberts says.

"A lot of surfers around here ride his boards, or know about them, so it is great to open up here," he said.

The store has sponsored the Byron Bay Boardriders as well as hosted their 2016 sign-on day.

Surfers from the JS Industry team - including world number 19 Ace Buchan - came along to help start their season.

The JS Garage stocks 150 of the latest surfboard models including the recently released HyFi Epoxy series, a hybrid fibre board that is faster, lighter and stronger than standard boards.

"JS makes some of the best, high-performance boards in the world," Mr Wade said.

He runs the shop with Tim Carroll and they both know the "ins and outs" of making boards, and have experienced the rigours of competitive surfing.

"People can come in to talk to us about what they need from a surfboard," Mr Wade said.

"This is great for Byron Bay.

"We're planning on co-ordinating a few different ways to interact with the local community.

"Everything from demo days at the beach to beer nights and movie premieres at the shop to keep it fresh."
