Surfer Stu’s slaying of Slater, Medina a ‘dream come true’
WIN or lose, Lennox Head surfer Stu Kennedy has had a week to remember at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.
He finished second in his fourth round heat against Hawaiian John John Florence and Kanoa Igarashi yesterday.
Florence secured the narrow win on 11.90 (out of a possible 20) with Kennedy just back on 11.43.
Kennedy has been the talk of tour after beating 11-time world champion Kelly Slater and defending event and 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina.
It is his first Championship Tour event after earning a call-up as a replacement surfer for the injured Bede Durbridge.
“I love surfing against the best guys. It pushes my surfing to the next level after grinding it out on the Qualifying Series for so long,” Kennedy said.
“I just knew I could get on some good waves and let my surfing do the talking.
“It has been a grind to get to this level, but I’m so stoked to have the opportunity to be the replacement. Hopefully I can keep getting more opportunities throughout the year.
“To beat those two guys, Kelly and Gabriel, it’s like a dream come true.”
Meanwhile, former Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright advanced to the semi-finals of the Roxy Pro after she beat six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore yesterday.
