Lennox Head-made surf film goes international

THERE'S wisdom in the water where these women surf - that's the message Lennox Head local Michelle Shearer's film is sending.

The film, Women Who Run With the Tides, is set to receive international recognition after it was selected to be part of this year's San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival in March.

It's also been short-listed for the 2014 Byron Bay Film Festival.

Ms Shearer said her film was about three older women who surf in Lennox Head every day together, and the unique qualities they bring to the surfing line-up.

She said the women brought friendship, wisdom, warmth and support to the surf.

It is a contrast to the traditionally competitive and male-dominated sport.

"It's so competitive when you surf in the usual line-up," Ms Shearer said.

"And I think everything has its place, and competition has its place, but as does the wisdom of our elders."

The film features Marg Bryant, 64, Sally Petrie, 58, and Dr Carol Stevenson, 50, who have all been surfing for more than 10 years and are based in Lennox Head.

In the film, Carol Stevenson says surfing with women was a much more hassle-free and relaxing experience.

"One of the things that happens when there's a lot of women in the line-up is that you're aware of each other," she said.
