Surf club celebrates 75 years

A DEVASTATING tornado damaged the Brunswick beachfront in the 1960s and almost demolished the surf lifesaving clubhouse.

Despite repairs to the building, the original surf clubhouse was never the same again and a new home for the club was later built.

Now, the Brunswick organisation will celebrate its 75th anniversary this weekend, with members – past and present– invited to attend.

Historic changes to the surf club and its operations have not affected the loyalty of the club’s members, Brunswick SLSC publicity officer Michele Dennis said.

“Although the clubhouse and surf lifesaving equipment has changed dramatically over the years, one thing that hasn’t changed is the dedication of our members,” she said

“Volunteer surf lifesavers are such an important part of our community and at Brunswick SLSC we are so excited to say thank you to everyone who has given up their time to keep the visitors to our beach safe.”

A members’ anniversary dinner will be held at the Brunswick Bowling Club tonight where two members will be honoured with life membership status.

A morning surf swim, cricket and brunch will take place at the surf club tomorrow.
