Supporting the elderly

STAYING small and flexible is key to the philosophy of Reflections Counselling and Support Services, a new business which brings a synergistic mix of services to the aged and disabled people of the Byron Shire.

The business's unique approach reflects the diverse yet complimentary professional background of its founder Merryn Lonergan.

Merryn, who also founded Amitayus Hospice Service and worked for 14 years for HomeCare NSW, has also been a general nurse, midwife, counsellor and voluntary carer.

It's this eclectic background which has formed Reflections Counselling and Support Services's philosophy to caring for people in their own homes.

Merryn says she loves being able to bring together her skills in the area of counselling, aged care service, disability support and palliative care - something larger services simply can't offer.

"It's my dream job to be able to bring all these together," she says.

One of the biggest points of difference, says Merryn, is the service's flexibility.

If people are having trouble getting to their medical appointments the staff at Reflections can drive them and wait with them.

"We promote independence by supporting clients to carry out every day activities as well as accompany them to attend special events. We aim to work with individuals to provide the services that they need and can work with other agencies to fill in the gaps in service," she says.

The company also offers palliative care support, with the philosophy to enhance the quality of clients and their family's lives and provide support to them to live each day authentically.

"We can provide comfort during the long nights while the family gets some rest," she says.

Categories of care

Reflections counselling and Support Services offer care that spans many care types rather than seeing patients as being stuck in categories of care. It offers the following fee-based service.

Support fees of $35 per hour 9-5 Monday to Friday.

Overnight service starting at $250 per night.

Counselling Service at $75 per hour.
