Support for 000 services push
A PETITION for better Telstra 000 back-up services has already attracted more than 100 signatures.
Anne-Marie Rankmore and Yvonne Smith joined forces last month to start the petition after emergency phone services crashed during the Australia Day long weekend floods, leaving their elderly parents without aid in their time of need.
Ms Rankmore, whose mother Fay Craigie was found bruised and unconscious on the floor of her Proserpine home after attempting to contact 000, and Mrs Smith, whose elderly father tried to call 000 while suffering a heart attack, were united in grief at the passing of their loved ones.
The women recently launched the Emergency Phone Petition, saying the outcome for their loved ones might have been different if better back-up systems existed. Ms Rankmore said she'd "easily" found more than 100 people willing to sign the petition.
"I'd encourage people to find a hardcopy petition or get online and sign on there," she said.
"This is a huge problem and it affects everyone. We need something done about this now. I won't rest until I can guarantee what happened to my mum doesn't happen to anyone else."
Federal member for Dawson George Christensen, who launched the petition, said emergency phone numbers were "absolutely critical" and must be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"We have to leave no stone unturned to ensure we don't see a repeat of the Australia Day weekend and the petition calls on the government to work with telecommunication service providers to ensure the most reliable outcomes are achieved."
