A summer of shopping in Paris

WE joined the Johnsons for a lovely morning walk along the Seine today and then over to Place de la Concorde, which is setting up for Bastille Day.

It made us think of Gary Love setting up for the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

It’s such a spectacular location we had to sit for a while in the Jardin des Tuileries, looking across to the Arc de Triomphe, and soak in the essence of early-morning Paris.

As for the rest of the day? Well, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do and today that was shopping. Perfect timing, too, considering it’s 34 degrees Celsius here and the big magasins (department stores) are deliciously air-conditioned.

We went to Monmartre and sort of happened upon the Palais Royale, with its very French gardens and trendy shopping arcades.

This is the place to go for vintage designer garments.

Not far away is Galerie Vivienne with Jean-Paul Gautier’s famous store at the entrance. It is a pretty arcade filled with designer and quirky collector shops.

But then it was on to the famous Printemps and Galeries La Fayette. Ooh lala.

What a fabulous day.

Printemps is one of the world’s oldest department stores. Built in 1865 it is historic on the outside and the epitome of light and contemporary style on the inside.

Galeries La Fayette is a grand old department store from 1912 and features a huge central leadlight dome and eight levels of gilded balconies and balustrades.

There are food halls, restaurants, a spectacular cosmetics store and, of course, more shoes.

It’s now 10.30pm and not quite dark but there is still lots of activity on the street below. Think I’ll make a nice cup of tea and sit out on the balcony and take it all in.
