Subtract clutter, then add greenery

SPRING is the time most of us think to clean and clear out but, if you're like me, somehow that time has come and gone so let's look to the new year as inspiration to reinvent our homes.

The simplest way to reinvent and beautify your home is to de-clutter it. I know I write often about this, but less really is more - and de-cluttering is the single most effective and affordable way to style your home.

The best way to de-clutter is one room at a time. For instance, I have started with my bedroom where books have gathered far and beyond my bookshelves' capacity. My aim is to purge as many books as required until they fit neatly and attractively on the shelves, rather than the messy stacks that were gathering alongside the bookshelves.

As for decor, have I mentioned Pantone's colour for 2017? It's Greenery - how fabulous is that! Greenery signifies new beginnings; a fresh start for the new year and the great outdoors. This year, commit to truly bringing the outdoors inside by adding lashings of fresh, potted plants.

I figure the world may be going to hell in a handbasket (my favourite American saying), but let's go lush in our homes. For instance, I bought two new peace lilies before Christmas and I plan to add more greenery to my humble home as I implement that number one trend for 2017.

Not only do plants look gorgeous inside, especially if arranged in a cluster, potted plants cleanse the air we breathe. Now that's a fresh start for the home.
