Sturridge double helps Liverpool into cup quarter-finals
FOOTBALL: Daniel Sturridge has reminded manager Jurgen Klopp of his talents after firing Liverpool to a 2-1 League Cup win over Tottenham at Anfield.
Sturridge, regularly on the outer in the German's reign at the club, scored twice to help Liverpool into the last eight of the competition.
Vincent Janssen, another who has failed to impress at his new club, pulled a goal back from the penalty spot for Spurs but it was not enough.
Liverpool, which has won a record eight League Cups and was beaten in last season's final, took the lead after nine minutes when Sturridge poked home from close range.
The England international, who has started just two of Liverpool's last six games in all competitions, added a second when he deflected Marko Grujic's shot in.
Klopp was full of praise for Sturridge's performance, saying: "He did what he has to do. It was brilliant, he could have scored three or four.”
Also through to the quarter-finals is Arsenal, which had a 2-0 win over Championship side Reading thanks to a double to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Newcastle eased through too, the Championship leader thrashing 10-man Preston North End 6-0.
Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic and Senegal's Mohamed Diame both scored twice, while Matt Ritchie netted a penalty and Ayoze Perez scored in stoppage time.
Hull City, which is struggling in the English Premier League, had a 2-1 win at second-tier club Bristol City.
Fellow Championship side Leeds United beat Norwich City 3-2 on penalties.
