University upsets Lismore City

SOUTHERN Cross University have picked themselves up off the canvas in the manner of a champion prize-fighter to record a stunning 29-27 upset over cross town rivals Lismore City in FNC Rugby Union on Saturday.

The Gold Rats defied their lowly ranking to notch their first win of the year and inflict a major blow on City's minor premiership hopes.

Trailing 22-12 at the break, John Jenkins' men came out and bullied their more seasoned opponents out of the match.

Making his first grade debut, Blake Brewer-Charles scored a pair of tries from fullback in the morale boosting victory.

Although there is plenty of work to be done on his kicking game, Jenkins sees promise in his new number 15.

“You see a lot of guys come into the top grade and take a while to find their feet,” Jenkins said.

“But Blake has actually lifted a gear – played better than he has in reserves all year.”

Casino may have headed into enemy territory looking for revenge, but all they got was a towelling as the Pioneers ran in five tries to grab the bonus point and stretch their lead over Lennox Head to a full four points.

In Ballina, winger Ben Robinson scored a hat-trick of tries as the Seahorses dealt with Grafton 34-12.

Robinson now has eight tries in 2010 to lead the FNCRU.
