Students help to raise domestic violence awareness

The Rivers P-12 Learning Community is making a stand against domestic violence by hosting a White Ribbon fundraiser this Sunday at Hepburn Park in Goonellabah

The event will help to raise awareness and funds to support local organisations that provide support for Domestic and Family Violence victims in Lismore, Sonya Laverty Acting Head Teacher of The Rivers Secondary College said.

It will also support White Ribbon Australia's work to end men's violence against women.

All funds raised will assist with primary prevention initiatives in schools, workplaces and the broader community, she said.

The inaugural Rivers P-12 White Ribbon Classic will include a walkathon through Butterfly Gully, starting and finishing at Hepburn Park. There will also be a 100m dash for children and adolescents.

The Rivers Secondary College is made up of the three secondary public high schools of Kadina, Lismore and Richmond River. The College also works closely with other local public schools in and around Lismore.

All of these schools make up The Rivers P-12 Learning Community, she said

"Violence against women is at epidemic proportions. Devastatingly, over 12 months, on average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of intimate partner violence," Ms Laverty said.

To register in the walk or the 100metre dash, you can register on the day by simply turning up and making a gold coin donation at the appropriate table.

When: 9am Sunday November 22, 2015

Where: Hepburn Park Goonellabah - (if it is raining we will move to Kadina High Campus)

Cost: Gold coin donation.

Events: 3km family walkathon and children's sprint races.
