REVIVAL TRIP: Southern Cross School K-12 students Tim Eddy (left) and Owen Taylor are heading to Japan for two weeks to see the recovery efforts following last year’s tsunami and earthquake.

TIM Eddy and Owen Taylor are excited to be selected for an overseas trip, but they have mixed emotions about what they will see.

The Southern Cross School K-12 Year 9 students head to Japan in December for two weeks to see the recovery work that has been done since last year's tsunami and earthquake, and also volunteer to help out.

The Kizuna scholarship trip is paid for by the Japanese government with the aim of promoting an understanding of the recovery efforts, and to strengthen cultural ties.

The program is administered through AFS Intercultural Programs Australia.

The 15 year-olds, who both study Japanese at school, were two of 200 high school students selected from 1300 applications around Australia.

They were selected on their language skills and enthusiasm for learning more about Japan.

"It should be emotional," Tim said. He has been to Japan several times before.

Owen echoed Tim's sentiments, and said while he was excited about his first trip to Japan, "it could be confronting".

They will be hosted by Japanese families for a time during their stay, and will be visiting local schools.

Owen is going to Maebashi and Tim is heading to Shibata.
